About us

Our mission

Our mission is to give everyone an opportunity to gradually build a tangible, positive environmental impact by supporting forest restoration at scale, and to make it as easy and convenient as possible while addressing downsides of existing solutions.

Our origin story

The initial idea came up while browsing Reddit, where one Redditor shared their environmental impact tracking spreadsheet, but wasn’t sure how to properly include the compensation from recently bought trees. The organization from which they bought those trees didn’t provide reliable information on their impact and how it spreads over time.

That post inspired thorough research on tree planting and carbon credits, and led to a realization that there are problems with many initiatives that need to be addressed, such as presenting reforestation of industrial plantations as creating new forests, projecting the impact of an adult tree on every seedling, or even basing carbon credits on already sequestrated CO2 from existing forests.

That is why Green Wedge strives to make a real land cover change, creating new, diverse forests and woodlands for ecological purposes. It also includes trees’ survivability in impact assessment, to not overestimate it, and report progress in a real-time manner. Such approach also shows the true scale of action needed to offset the usual environmental impact.

Founding Green Wedge was possible thanks to the support from the Social Tides Aspire program, powered by the INCO Group, which supports social innovators in creating and implementing solutions for the main sustainable development challenges.

Meaning behind the name

Green wedge is a concept from urban and regional planning, meaning the protection of existing natural or semi-natural environments or their introduction in developed areas, to improve air quality, access to recreation, biodiversity, and microclimate moderation.

Our initiative is similarly aimed at reclaiming overexploited lands for nature, which will offer multiple benefits, both for restored ecosystems and their surroundings.
